Christmas 2016 Bucket List

I am on a serious holiday kick! We have a Friendsgiving coming up on Saturday with some other Americans who also miss everything about Thanksgiving, our house is decorated and the Christmas markets start today!

With December right around the corner, I’ve been thinking about all the things I want to do this Christmas season. We aren’t going home for the holidays this year, so it is extra important to have things to look forward to this holiday season so we don’t get too homesick. Here’s my list of things I want to do over Christmas 2016!

christmas bucket list

  1. Visit the Esslingen Christmas Market. This is supposed to be one of the best Christmas markets in the area. Basically, I could add all of the Christmas markets to this list, but I am most excited to visit this one. Christmas markets are the thing to do in Germany. It’s more of an outdoor party with booths set up selling food, drinks and holiday gifts and decor. We visited last year during our house hunting trip to the one in our area, but we had so much on our minds, I don’t think we really enjoyed it as much as we could.
  2. Tübingen ChocoART Fest. This is another must-do for our area. Luckily, my parents are visiting during this festival where literally chocolate is everywhere. There’s chocolate from 4 or 5 different countries and this city is supposed to be magical. A magical city that’s covered in chocolate? Sign.Me.Up.
  3. Go ice skating. A few years ago over Christmas, my family and I went ice skating in downtown Cincinnati. Even though we only skated for an hour, it was so fun to skate downtown and to then go out to dinner. I want to do this exact thing this year.
  4. Bake holiday cookies. I can’t be the only one who wants to eat all the baked goods this time of year, right? I want to bake chocolate chip cookies, some lemon loaf and maybe some coffee cake.
  5. Watch all the movies. We’re talking Home Alone, Love Actually, Elf, Four Christmases, Christmas Vacation, The Holiday. All of them.
  6. Take a family picture. It can be something impromptu or with our self-timer in front of our Christmas tree. I just want a nice family picture to remember Christmas 2016.
  7. See some mountains. Snow capped mountains would make my life. We have a trip to Switzerland planned in a few weeks and I hope to sit inside, with a fire place and a glass of red wine. It just sounds so magical and extremely holiday-like.

Basically, all I want to do is snuggle up, spend quality time with Vinn and my parents while they are here, and celebrate our amazing life here in Germany. It will be our first Christmas here and I want to experience everything it has to offer.

What do you want to do this holiday season?

Switzerland is beautiful everywhere. Murren takes an extra effort to get to, but it is beautiful. I lived there and worked as a nanny for three months, in the Summer of 1976! Slept under the stars one night with the other nannys and woke to find out we were surrounded by big cows with bells on them wondering why we were sleeping in their pasture!

Wow! That’s amazing. I can’t wait to go.
