In an effort to lose weight, I decided to take a class at Orangetheory Fitness this past Saturday.
I heard about OrangeTheory from a number of sources, but what really made me want to try it was knowing that Heather Dubrow from RHOC does this work out. And have you seen her? If this is what she does, then sign me up. The Fancy Pants chicks need to stick together.
Luckily, they are currently running a promotion for 2 free sessions, so I got to try it for free.
So, what is Orangetheory?
It is high-intensity interval training to the max. According to their web site, Orangetheory is a 60-minute workout designed to push you into the “Orange Zone.” This zone focuses on “Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption,” which allows you to continue to burn calories even after you’re done working out. Everyone wears a heart rate monitor and your zones are displayed on large TV screens throughout the studio.
Each class is different but you always do circuit-training between the treadmill, floor and weight exercises and the row machine.
I got to the studio 30 minutes before the class started and walked through the studio with the trainer. I thought this was really great because I got to meet the trainer and have the chance to ask questions and explain my goals without feeling embarrassed about asking questions during the class.
I started on the row machine. And, yikes, was it tough! Then I went to the floor and did 3 moves until it was time to hit up the treadmill. I found my base pace and stayed there for a few minutes. Then we pushed for 2 minutes at 2 speed increase and incline at 8%. And it kept going up and down like that. I looked at the clock on the treadmill and saw it was only 20 minutes in and I thought, “How am I going to get through this?” But I kept going.
I went back to the floor and by the time I was back on the treadmill we only had 15 minutes left!
I definitely felt the burn the entire time and 2 days later, I am still feeling the burn. I can’t even walk up the stairs!
One really cool feature about the studio is they send you an email with your performance after each class. Here’s mine:
The instructor told me that I had a phenomenal split. (Each person’s zone splits are displayed at the end of class). The goal is to be in the orange zone 12-20% of the time. And I was at 18%. You don’t want to be in the red zone for more than 5% of the time, so being at 1% was pretty darn good. I burned 648 calories and based on my splat points, I continued to burn about 200 calories after the workout. There’s some legit science behind getting to the splat points, I just don’t know what it is. I know they take into account your age, weight and your zone splits.
All in all, I loved this workout! It flew by, everyone that worked at the studio made me feel comfortable as a newbie and I left with a basic membership! I felt my endorphin high for about 2 hours after the class. I kept saying, “Stella just got her groove back!”
I’m excited for my next class next Saturday and know that continuously going to classes will only help me reach my fitness goals!
Have you ever tried Orangetheory?
Well, I did it! I went to a class at my gym in Germany. And…
Happy Tuesday morning! I’ve had quite the productive day so far and it…
